LIFESAVING

The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) offers a range of Lifesaving courses including the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches (NRASTC),  National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches - Light and Aquatic Therapy Shallow Pool Rescue Award (ATSPRA).

 

These awards have been designed to underpin the knowledge of swimming teachers, coaches and others responsible for the delivery of lessons and water therapy sessions.

 

The qualification is valid for 24 months and the certificate must be renewed within the validity period.

 

National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches

The NRASTC is a supervision and rescue qualification for teachers working on the poolside or in the water during programmed activities.

The qualification is suitable for a wide range of swimming pool designs and water depths. It is a basic test of rescue knowledge and skills for people teaching swimming, water safety and other programmed aquatic pool based disciplines.

It is designed to show an understanding of class management, accident prevention, aquatic rescue, resuscitation and first aid.

National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers & Coaches
Light

The NRASTC Light is a supervision and rescue qualification for teachers working on the poolside or in the water during programmed activities.

 

This award is only suitable when the facility has staff qualified as Lifeguards or First Aiders that are available to respond quickly to a swimming teacher or coach in the event of an emergency. If Lifeguard
or First Aid backup is not available, then standard NRASTC should be used.

Automated External Defibrillation(AED)
(Bolt On)

This qualification can be added to your existing National Rescue Award course with an additional 1.5 hours training.

On successful completion of the award you will gain an additional certification valid for 2 years.

If taken separately the Automated External Defibrillation Qualification requires an additional half days training and can cost up to £40.00.

Aquatic Therapy Shallow Pool Rescue Award (ATSPRA)

The ATSPRA is a supervision and rescue qualification for therapists, teachers and support staff working on the poolside or in the water during activities such as aquatic therapy or therapeutic exercise/play.

The qualification is suitable for use in shallow pools where the rescuer will not be required to swim to perform a rescue, with the water no deeper than the rescuers chest depth.

Life Support Award

This award establishes a competent level of skill in Basic Life Support (learnt on an adult manikin) and in the diagnosis and treatment of choking.

Award syllabus:

• Awareness of own safety

• Turning a casualty onto their back

• Checking responsiveness

• Sequence and application of CPR

• Managing regurgitation

• Recovery position

• Diagnosis and treatment of choking

Optional first aid:

• Diagnosis and treatment of bleeding

• Diagnosis and treatment of shock

Life Support Award 3

This award establishes a competent level of skill in Basic Life Support for infant, child, and adult casualties, and in the diagnosis and treatment of choking.

Award syllabus:

• Awareness of own safety

• Turning a casualty onto their back

• Checking responsiveness

• Sequence and application of CPR for infant, child, adult, and drowned casualties

• Managing regurgitation

• Recovery position

• Use of a pocket mask

• Diagnosis and treatment of choking

Optional first aid:

• Diagnosis and treatment of bleeding

• Diagnosis and treatment of shock
